How You Can Help People with Vision Loss

There are many ways you can help people who are blind or visually impaired. We offer flexible day, evening and weekend hours, and provide training for specialized service areas. Below are the areas of volunteer opportunities we offer, and the openings currently available.

Medical and Vision Services
Volunteers provide heartfelt support in our clinic, which provides medical services for clients with vision loss, chronic illnesses and other disabilities. Volunteers provide administrative support and general assistance to administrative staff including filing, faxing, answering telephones obtaining authorizations, verifying insurance eligibility, scheduling appointments, assisting new clients, etc. 
Commitment: Multiple Days/Week

Day Treatment Program
Volunteers provide support to program staff for the Developmental Disabilities Day Treatment program which provides training, support and recreation to adults with vision impairment and developmental disabilities. Volunteers provide support with arrival and dismissal, food preparation and recreational activities including park outings and adaptive learning experiences.

Creative Services
Volunteers proficient in select desktop publishing programs provide graphic design assistance on special projects. Skilled photographers assist with photo documentation of Lighthouse Guild programs and services and at special events. Writers assist with developing or editing content for various Lighthouse Guild communications.

Heilbrunn School
Volunteers assist K–12 students ages five to 21, who are blind, visually impaired, deaf/blind, and have additional disabilities. Responsibilities include providing support to classroom teachers by assisting students with classroom and daily activities including physical assistance with walking, playing and instructional materials.

Internships
Learn as you volunteer. Student interns provide staffing support in Lighthouse Guild departments and learn to master technical, administrative, communication and project management skills specific to the needs of their assigned department. Internships are unpaid and available to college and graduate students.

Music School
Volunteers act as teaching assistants to the classroom instructors in our leading Comprehensive Music Program for young people. They also serve as guides for the students providing traveling assistance both on-site and during field trips.

Office Assistant
Perfect your skills. Volunteers provide administrative support on projects, programs and services. Tasks include clerical, reception, computer work and project coordination. Knowledge of Microsoft Office is generally required.

Reading Services
Volunteers read to adults who are blind or visually impaired. Reading materials cover a wide range of topics and support the client’s academic, employment, leisure or personal reading needs. Clients provide their own reading materials, and sessions last for two hours. Volunteers must be able to speak clearly and read at a college level.

Sales Associate
Volunteers provide customer service and assistance to patrons in the Store and
assist them with making selections and finalizing their purchases.

Special Events
Volunteers assist with guest registration, product or information distribution, and staffing, act as guides and help to ensure the event runs smoothly. Events include, but are not limited to, concerts, movie screenings, book signings, seminars and guest lectures.

Young Visionaries
The Young Visionaries is a volunteer leadership group committed to supporting Lighthouse Guild’s mission-related services for people who are blind or visually impaired. Consisting of young professionals, the Young Visionaries recruit motivated candidates from diverse backgrounds and industries who are eager to take on a leadership role in fundraising activities associated with Lighthouse Guild and are interested in volunteer leadership opportunities within the organization.

Youth Programs
Volunteers assist instructors in recreational, educational, and social programs for youth between the ages of 7-18 who are visually impaired. Two letters of reference and experience interacting with youth is required.
Commitment: (October – June, 9am – 3pm or 5pm -10pm) 1-3 days/month, 1 day/week
