You can learn to live with vision impairment. Although there are many causes of vision loss, most people do not lose their vision completely, but experience a variety of vision loss symptoms such as:

  • Blurry vision
  • Center vision loss
  • Side vision loss
  • Combination vision loss
  • Glare and contrast problems

At the Lighthouse Guild’s Low Vision Rehabilitation Clinic, an optometrist or ophthalmologist can provide a low vision examination, which is different from a routine eye exam. In addition to checking vision, your eye doctor will discuss with you things that you have trouble doing because of your vision loss, and will work with you on new ways to perform those activities.

You may be prescribed and provided training in the use of low vision devices such as:

  • Special high-powered glasses with built-in magnification
  • Magnifiers, either handheld or on a stand, with and without built-in light
  • Telescopes, either handheld or built into eyeglasses
  • Special televisions that allow you to magnify and change the contrast when reading books, newspapers and magazines
