Lighthouse Guild Empowers Students with Low Vision

May 9, 2018

Posted by Hanys

Lighthouse Guild is committed to helping people with vision loss live full, independent, and productive lives. To that end, the organization is granting free access to a library of more than 500,000 books to people who are blind or have low vision.

Lighthouse Guild offers the book program in collaboration with the American Academy of Ophthalmology and Bookshare, the world’s largest online library for people with print disabilities. The program uses the Spotlight Gateway iPad app to expand access to digital reading materials designed for students with low vision. Participants receive training at Lighthouse Guild headquarters and cooperating vision agencies to help them navigate and use the free library. Students of all ages can be referred to the program by their ophthalmologist.

Currently, there are 31 participating states, including New York. A total of 138 students are registered across the U.S.
