Description of Services:

The Cabell County Public Library, Blind and Handicapped Services in West Virginia provides free library services through the Talking Books Library to anyone who is unable to use standard print materials because of a reading disability or other visual or physical impairment. Digital audio books are the most requested service and are provided through the mail free of charge. These books are on a specialized flash drive contained in a plastic cartridge that users can easily insert into the provided digital talking book machine. Many other titles are also available on 4-track cassette and can be played on the special 4-track tape player mailed to those requesting this format. There are more than 20,000 titles housed in the downtown library, appealing to a wide variety of reading interests. In addition, Talking Books Library offers a Perkins Brailler (typewriter), hand-held magnifiers, and large-print catalogs to assist clients in selecting recorded books. Descriptive videos are offered through the library’s audiovisual department. The reference department on the library’s second floor has a public computer equipped with Windows XP magnification. Cabell County Public Library also offers upgraded Window-Eyes software, which reads web pages and other computer-based programs to aid people with vision loss
