How to Keep Your Eyes and Your Children’s Safe During July 4th

Independence Day means grilling with friends and family, swimming, and watching fireworks. Although fun to look at, fireworks can cause serious, and sometimes permanent, eye injuries. Every year, thousands of people, even if they are not lighting them, suffer eye injuries from fireworks.

Safety Tips When Around Fireworks

  • Leave it to the professionals- Go to a community fireworks show instead of purchasing your own fireworks
  • View fireworks from at least 500 feet away
  • If you do decide to purchase fireworks, please:
    • Keep away from children
    • Use protective eyewear

If You Suffer a Fireworks Eye Injury

  • Seek medical attention ASAP
  • Do not:
    • Rub your eyes
    • Rinse your eyes
    • Apply pressure to your eyes
    • Remove any objects that are stuck in the eye
    • Apply ointments or take any blood-thinning pain medications such as aspirin or ibuprofen
